Reviews of albums old and new
10 August 2009
- Aquarium Drunkard takes the time to revisit Sign O’ The Times, the amazing 1987 album by Prince. I agree that this was a high point for the little purple guy, the point at which he still had plenty of new, exciting ideas and the freedom and confidence to express them. Prince could probably write a standard party jam during an elevator ride (and that may be what he’s been doing for the last couple of decades) but this album is solid, varied and interesting.
- The new Fiery Furnaces album, I’m Going Away, is out. Reviews – like this one on Pitchfork – all seem to agree that they’ve toned down the willful weirdness. Fans of Gallowbird’s Bark who walked away during Bitter Tea may want to return for a listen. I’ve not heard it yet, but will catch it soon.
