Scientists synthesize a living cell

Twenty scientists working for ten years have, effectivey, synthesized a building block of life.

A team lead by US scientist Craig Venter has replicated, by combining the chemicals required, the DNA of a type of microbe. They put that DNA into the DNA-free cell of another species. And that newly-build cell lives: it grows and divides.

This is a wonderful, important milestone. Like all great advances, and all spider-powers, it comes with great responsibility. But the potential for custom-built organisms is more than anyone can imagine.
