This One Is On Us: NIN DVD project emerges

In March I blogged about how a hardcore group of NIN fans were creating an edited DVD release from many gigs of raw high-def live concert footage that Trent Reznor made available.

The fruits of that labour are finally ready for the tasting. Several versions of video were released for torrenting on Christmas Day, with more to come. Here’s the current release schedule, with descriptions from the site:

  • December 25th, 2009 – “The Gift” – full show created from source released by NIN, professionally edited, color corrected and authored.
  • January 25th, 2010 – “Extras” – behind the scenes footage, alternative visuals, interviews and a lot more – a hell of a lot more.
  • February 25th, 2010 – “Las Vegas” – full show consisting of material recorded solely by fans at the Las Vegas performance on 13th December, 2008. DVD 2 will be solely created from material “leaked” from someone who, um, maybe knows the band rather well. Our wonderful copyright laws written before the internet and before, well, 8 track cassettes are hardly flexible enough to deal with this arrangement, so we’re politely asking them to look the other way while we get on with this.

It’s really good to see that this wasn’t just a pipe dream: a forward-thinking artist and tech-savvy, obsessive fans have produced something quite cool. I’m friends with some of those obsessives, so I applaud their mania.

This One Is On Us: NIN fan video project

Although I’ve blogged about all of it before, Shreena sums up the background well (credit where it’s due; it seems this is the blurb from, though Shreena is a part of that effort):

On 5th May, 2008, Nine Inch Nails released their latest album, The Slip, free, online, as a gift to their fans. Or as Trent put it: “This one’s on me”.

On December 13th, 2008, dozens of Nine Inch Nails fans recorded the last show in the Lights In The Sky tour at Planet Hollywood, Las Vegas.

On January 7th, 2009, over 400Gb of video from the Victoria, Portland and Sacramento shows was unofficially released by the band.

Eris lays out the inevitable obsessive fan reaction:

Some very talented NINnies have been having their way with some excellent footage from many of the shows this year in the Lights in the Sky tour of Nine Inch Nails. What has surfaced is a totally fan collaborated DVD set called Another Version of the Truth: This One is On Us.

The web page for the project, with info on how to get the double-DVD release, is here.

The teaser video is below.

EDIT: and it looks like there’s more fan video projects underway.
